— Labor Contract, R.C. Bryan with Freedpeople, January 14, 1867On January 14, 1867 — one day before Abner and James S. sign their contract — Robert C. Bryan enters into a separate labor agreement with eleven freedpeople for his own plantation operation. The two contracts are made on consecutive days, by brothers, on what were once parts of the same estate. Robert's contract covers the Lawson family, the Allington family, members of the Jones and Boston families — eleven individuals agreeing to labor for one year in exchange for wages paid at year's end.
Five members of the Lawson family sign Robert's contract. Peter Lawson — $150, the highest wage on the contract. Ennan Lawson — $60. Richmond Lawson — $50. Cilia Lawson — $100. Olivia Lawson — $100. The family name is spelled Lawson in document 1 and Sansom in document 3 of the same contract — two different transcriptions of the same name in the same document. The family is one family. Five members, four different wage rates reflecting different roles or ages.
Robert C. Bryan administered the estate of James A. Bryan from 1847 to 1866 — nineteen years. During that time he also developed his own separate plantation operation, running under the R.C.B. brand that appeared alongside the J.A.B. brand in the 1863 and 1864 cotton sales. This contract is made on his own account, not on behalf of the estate. The witness is J.T. Hendrick. The eleven people who sign are employed by Robert C. Bryan, physician and planter, operating independently from the land that Abner now holds.
Susan Boston — $75 — and Green Boston / Louisa Green Boston — $50 — connect Robert's contract to the Boston family present in Abner's contract on the same day. Two different Boston family members on two different plantations, both in Houston County, signed on consecutive January days. Titus Jones and Venus/Vena Jones — $75 — are also present, alongside Peter Jones at $150. The Jones family spans both contracts as well. The families that worked this land are present across both Bryan operations as the plantations separate into independent farms.
