1861 Named Slaves
Katherine Bryan passed away in May 1861. An inventory of her property was created for the purpose of dividing it among her heirs. Since her husband James's estate had not yet been settled, names were drawn from a hat to determine who she owned.
Names pulled from a hat
"We divided the Negros into six lots numbering from one to six. We then placed the numbers having the Negro's names on them in one hat and placed five blanks in another hat and put C H Bryan's name in with the blanks. We after shaking both hats we commenced (?) arranging (?) a number from one hat and a blank from another hat until we drew C. H. Bryan's name and the number drawn with her name had on it the following named Negros to wit "
