Dogtrot Hallway

 William Faulkner's voice

In the olden days, when the land was yet untamed, dogtrots rose humble and sturdy, oft hewn from rough logs, their open central halls a breath of air in the wilderness. Pioneers, newly come to the frontier’s edge, would first raise a single room, a meager shield against the elements, only to add another as their lives took root. The roof and floor, stretched betwixt the two, formed a breezy passage, christened for the dogs who lolled there, seeking shade from the Georgia sun.

The Bryan House, though, was no common dogtrot, but a finer breed, one crafted of milled wood in 1832 for its gift of coolness and the generous sprawl of its outdoor living. It stood as a testament to James A. Bryan’s vision, its open heart welcoming the soft whispers of the breeze. Yet, by 1915, time and necessity had wrought changes. Front and rear doors were fitted, enclosing the once-open hall, as if to guard its secrets. Upstairs, a grand room was fashioned, vast enough for kin and kith to gather in revelry, though the rear half of that second floor was lowered three feet, pressing down the first floor’s ceiling like a sigh. A twelve-foot transom window, once proud at the hall’s center, was shifted to an upstairs wall, its light now slanting soft across the gatherings. A stair platform, too, was added, easing the perilous climb of the closet-like stairs, a nod to comfort in a house grown weary with years.

When the property passed into new hands in 2020, the enclosed hall bore the scars of vandals’ careless wrath. Yet, with reverence for its storied past, restoration began, a labor of love to coax back its former grace. The front and rear enclosures were joined, welcoming a sturdy front door that stood resolute. The rear ceiling was lifted once more to its rightful height, breathing free again, and the transom window returned to its central throne, casting light as it had in days long gone. At the rear, an up-swing wall was crafted, a modern touch woven into the old bones of the house, ensuring the Bryan House might stand proud yet, its spirit unbroken by time’s relentless march.
